James Allen was a grand finalist in the 1999 Wrightson AGMARDT Young Farmer of the Year competition, held in July in Hamilton. James has been actively involved in the Young Farmers organisation for a number of years within the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Originally from a sheep and beef farm near Raetihi in the Ruapheu region, James studied for his Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture) degree before moving to Waikato. Currently employed by Agriculture New Zealand as a dairy farm consultant, James works with dairy farmers throughout the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. His work looks at all area of farm management including goal setting, financial planning, and pasture and stock management.

James is a current participant in the Kellogg Rural Leadership programme, based at Lincoln University. He sees organisations such as the Kellogg programme and the Young Farmers clubs essential to developing leadership skills within the rural communities.
