Dr James Belich is Professor of History at the University of Auckland. He has held visiting fellowships at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and will be Fulbright Visiting Professor of New Zealand Studies at Georgetown University, Washington D.C., in 2000. His books include The New Zealand Wars (1986); I Shall Not Die (1989) and Making Peoples (1996). He wrote and presented a five-episode television documentary series on the New Zealand Wars which screened in 1998. His books and series have won a total of eight awards.
