Dorothy has had twelve years experience in local body politics, the last six as Deputy-Mayor of Waitakere City. Her expertise is not only in working with communities to translate sustainable development policy into practice, but also spans health, education and the arts. Since retiring from politics, she has been a founding member of the Massey University Human Ethics committee, and co-authored 'Here Today, Where Tomorrow', a snapshot of sustainable development in New Zealand. She has renovated her house to include energy and water efficient features, which she regularly shows to interested people.
For the last two years Dorothy has been chairing a national process to improve the relationship between central government and community/voluntary, and iwi and Maori organisations, culminating in two reports 'Potential for Partnership, Whakatopu Whakaaro' 2001, and the recently released 'He Waka Kotuia- Joining Together on a Shared Journey,' August 2002. Dorothy is also a Director of P.R.I.S.M. (Pacific Rim Institute of Sustainable Management).
